CLEVELAND, Sarah Marietta, a charter member of the Relief Society organized by the Prophet Joseph Smith, March 17, 1842, and first counselor to Emma Smith, the first president of the Female Relief Society in Nauvoo, Ill., was born Oct. 20, 1788, at Becket, Burkshire Co., Mass., a daughter of Ebenezer Kingsley. She was the wife of Judge John Cleveland of Nauvoo, who was never converted to "Mormonism." Sister Cleveland was an earnest worker in the Nauvoo Relief Society during its existence from 1842 to 1844; but when the saints were expelled from Nauvoo she remained there with her husband and family.
